Checking a second-hand copy before buying

Specific condition questions are more useful than a single word such as good.

A used album is not just a title; it is a particular copy with its own history. An original product photograph cannot show its present condition. Before deciding, separate three questions: which edition is this, what is included, and what has actually been checked? This order prevents an attractive cover from concealing unresolved details.

Ask for the actual copy

Request clear pictures of the front, back and relevant identifying numbers. A multi-part set should show which components are present. One photograph of all the pieces together can prevent confusion. There is no need for close-ups exposing private receipts or address labels: identifying a record does not require the seller's personal information.

Separate the condition of the recording medium from its packaging. A worn sleeve may contain a playable record, while a glossy cover proves little about playback. For vinyl, ask about reported scratches, visible distortion and any listening test. For a CD, visible marks and actual playback are likewise different information. A visual inspection alone is not a complete guarantee of function.

Tested needs an explanation too. Was the whole recording heard or only its opening? On what equipment did a reported fault occur? Describing a limited test accurately is better than turning it into a comprehensive assurance. A seller who openly lacks playback equipment provides useful information. You can decide whether that uncertainty fits your purpose.

Clarify completeness and terms

Have missing inserts identified explicitly. Packaging may look complete while an originally included booklet is absent. However, do not expect every insert from another edition to be present here. Compare with the correct version's description. In a two-disc release, also establish that the set contains the intended two components rather than two copies of the same one.

Keep the important statements in the message exchange before deciding. This creates a shared basis without turning the conversation into an interrogation. Read the particular seller's delivery, return and payment conditions; they are not identical everywhere. This general inspection process does not establish a specific legal entitlement.

A concrete conversation rather than a condition formula

A useful message might ask: does the photograph show the offered copy? Are both discs and the described inner sleeves included? Has the whole release been played, and are any interruptions known? These are answerable questions rather than a demand for a professional appraisal. Begin with the details that would actually change your decision instead of requesting an unlimited sequence of photographs.

If a general condition grade is given, check whether the seller explains the grading system. An abbreviation without a definition can create different expectations. A description of actual marks remains useful. Do not treat a grade as a mathematically precise measurement: it summarises observations and may omit something particularly important to you.

The same questions work in person. Ask permission before taking a disc out, and establish whether a listening test is possible. A shop with playback facilities can offer different checks from a brief private handover. Location alone does not guarantee condition, however. What matters is the inspection actually available and the limitations you knowingly accept.

On arrival, compare the received copy with the agreed description and document visible differences before making alterations. Do not immediately attempt improvised treatment of unfamiliar damage. The useful outcome is an informed decision: suitable, suitable with an accepted limitation, or unsuitable. A second-hand album need not be immaculate, but its actual condition should match your expectations.
